What a Salary-to-Hourly Conversion Means
The hourly equivalent divides annual gross salary by the paid work hours you specify. The weekly and daily figures use the same schedule assumptions, while the monthly equivalent is annual salary divided by 12.
These are gross-pay equivalents, not take-home pay. Taxes, payroll deductions, overtime rules, unpaid time, bonuses and benefits can make actual compensation differ from a simple salary conversion.
Salary-to-hourly conversion is a gross-pay comparison, not a measurement of how much an hour of your life is actually worth after taxes, unpaid overtime or benefits. The assumed working weeks matter too: dividing by 52 weeks is appropriate only if the salary continues through paid leave. For comparing a salaried job with contract work, adjust the hours and weeks to match the time you realistically expect to bill or work, then account for taxes and benefits separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I subtract paid vacation from weeks per year?
Usually no if the annual salary continues during paid vacation. Use the number of paid weeks covered by the annual salary. Unpaid weeks can be excluded when appropriate.
Does the hourly equivalent include taxes or benefits?
No. It is a gross salary conversion based only on the schedule you enter.
Why can my effective hourly rate be lower than the calculator's gross rate?
Unpaid overtime, unpaid leave, taxes and employee costs can reduce what you effectively receive per hour. This calculator converts gross salary using the working-time assumptions you enter.
