Budget Calculator - Monthly Allocation Planner

Separate Spending, Savings and Unallocated Cash

The calculator treats savings and investments as an explicit allocation. Money left over after the categories you enter remains unallocated; it is not automatically labeled as savings. That distinction keeps the savings rate tied to money you actually direct toward savings or investments.

The 50/30/20 split is displayed only as a reference framework. Real budgets vary with housing costs, debt, family structure, income stability and financial goals, so being above or below one of those percentages is not automatically good or bad.

A budget is more useful when it shows what is actually left over than when it tries to score every category against a universal rule. Fixed costs, debt payments, childcare, medical expenses and local housing costs can make two households with the same income look completely different. Use the category breakdown to find where cash is going, then decide which expenses are genuinely adjustable. A high or low percentage in one category is context, not automatically evidence that the budget is good or bad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is unallocated cash counted as savings?

No. The calculator counts only the amount entered in Savings & Investments toward the savings rate. Unallocated cash remains separate until you decide where to direct it.

Is 50/30/20 a required budget?

No. It is a commonly used planning framework, not a universal rule. Your appropriate allocation can differ materially from 50/30/20.

Should every budget follow the same percentage split?

No. Percentage frameworks can be useful reference points, but real budgets depend on income, location, debt, household size and priorities. The calculator is more useful for seeing your actual allocation.
