Use the Rate That Applies to the Transaction
Enter the combined sales-tax rate that applies to the specific transaction. RatioCalc calculates the tax amount and after-tax total, or can reverse an after-tax total to recover the pre-tax amount using the same rate.
The entered sales-tax rate is measured against the pre-tax price. Tax as a share of the final after-tax price is a different percentage, so the calculator reports those two quantities separately. Taxability, exemptions and local rates remain jurisdiction- and item-specific.
Adding tax and extracting tax are inverse operations, but they are not done with the same multiplication. To add an 8% tax, multiply the net price by 1.08. To recover the net amount from a tax-inclusive total, divide the gross amount by 1.08. This distinction also explains why the tax amount as a share of the final price is not the same percentage as the statutory tax rate applied to the pre-tax price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is tax share of the final price lower than the entered tax rate?
Because the entered rate is applied to the pre-tax price, while tax share of the final price divides the tax amount by the larger after-tax total.
Can the sales-tax rate be 0%?
Yes. A 0% rate produces no tax and leaves pre-tax and after-tax prices equal.
Why is tax divided out of a tax-inclusive total instead of simply subtracting the tax percentage?
Because the statutory percentage was applied to the net price, not the gross total. Division reverses that multiplication and recovers the original tax base correctly.
